Theo Smit

Theo Smit was born in Enschede, Netherlands
Died suddenly on 4 November 2013.

After practicing a successful career as a Graphic Arts and Photography and rally racing Theo left the Netherlands to travel to North Africa with his first wife Hannie, they settled in Gran Canaria where they got involved in the tourism industry and later in scuba diving. In 1980, they moved to Jamaica. On January 1981, Poseidon Divers was opened. In January 1983, Theo became the first PADI Scuba Instructor in Jamaica and eventually became a master scuba diver trainer and underwater photography instructor. Always concerned about the environment, Theo took the initiative along with other dive operators to help to protect the marine life resulting in the first national park in Jamaica, The Montego Bay Marine Park. In 1997 Theo started Smart Designs to promote their dive business and other tourism businesses in Montego.

Theo had love for travelling, people, music (he played the piano, guitar and drums) and the environment, he was a kind, honest, loyal, patient and hardworking person, many will remember him as the gentle giant. One of his quotes is, “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life”.

After spending hundred of hours underwater observing and admiring the beauty of the underwater world. Theo maintain that they must be a creator. Theo started to study the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses and have come to know, love and appreciated Jehovah, the one who created all things (Revelations 4:11). Later he dedicated himself and got baptised as one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Theo is survived by his wife Heather, brothers Ab, Joop, Herman (Canada), Ron (Canada), and countless friends.
